Engineers need maths and passion

A passion for maths and a mathematical mind are essential if you want to succeed in mechanical engineering, said Professor Ronald So Ming-cho.

After graduating from the University of Hong Kong in 1962, he furthered his studies in the Unite States and specialised in aero dynamics.

With a PhD in Aero-space Science from Princeton University, he went on to teach in several US universities and worked at General Electric as a researcher.

In 1996, he joined Poly University as the chair professor. With 20 years experience teaching, he said US and local students thought and worked very differently.

He said US students are naturally curious and constantly ask questions, while Hong Kong students are only concerned about exams.

If students what to excel, they must question things and be prepared to speak up.

He said to study well students must: observe, comprehend, criticise and apply.
