THE tiger shark is the most ruthless and dangerous predator in the South China Sea, and is feared even by other sharks. Here are 10 things you should know about them: 1. The largest tiger shark caught was 9.1 metres long. A seven-metre shark can weigh more than three tonnes.

2. They have hundreds, sometimes thousands, of teeth and they never stop growing. They are arranged in up to 10 rows and, with a massive jaw opening of 50 centimetres, can cause devastating damage.

3. Elastic stomachs mean they can eat huge meals and swallow a human leg without difficulty.

4. They will eat anything. Their stomachs have been found to contain tin cans, tyres, turtles and other sharks.

5. A cruise is their normal pace but they have an incredible attack speed that takes victims by surprise.

6. Unlike most sharks, they are fairly independent creatures, hunting in small groups of two or three.
