Updated at 6.40pm, Wednesday: KFC opened its 400th mainland China fried chicken restaurant this week in downtown Beijing and claimed dominance over archrival McDonald's, the Beijing Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

KFC, which has done business in China for 13 years, told the Beijing newspaper it is the undisputed fast food king on the mainland, leaving McDonald's stuck in the mashed potatoes.

''Maybe McDonald's is number one in other countries, but in China we are the top one, we are the most favoured,'' said Su Jingshi, Greater China Operations chief executive of Tricon International, KFC's parent company.

KFC told the newspaper it ranked first in a survey on favourite brands in 30 Chinese cities.

McDonald's is closing in on KFC, though. In Beijing, KFC has 63 outlets and McDonald's 53. A year ago, KFC led by a bigger margin, 56 to 32, according to the newspaper.??

But KFC has opened 85 restaurants in China this year. Its eatery at the Henderson Centre, an upscale shopping mall and apartment building, opened on Tuesday.
