I refer to the claims of racism by journalist Martin Jacques in response to the tragic death of his ethnic Indian wife, Harinder Veriah, in January (article headlined, 'Fairy tale with a terrible ending', Sunday Morning Post, November 26).
I would like to support his comments by expressing my opinion that racism in Hong Kong is alive and kicking. It is most glaringly obvious in the dramatic variances in immigration laws between, for example, Filipinos and others.
It is more subtly obvious in the way overseas domestic helpers are often treated, spoken about and the comparatively meagre amount they are paid.
It is exposed in the derogatory and insulting way many foreigners speak to Hong Kong taxi drivers, and it is evident in the anti-mainland immigrant sentiment expressed through the SAR Government and Hong Kong people.
It is long overdue that we all become more aware of the blatant and subtle racism that is very much alive and kicking in this city.
