Extra coat keeps chills away

For most dogs, the colder weather is probably a relief after the hot stickiness of summer. They develop a thicker undercoat of fur which is usually adequate to keep them warm.

Breeds with little fur, like chihuahuas, and old, sick dogs or puppies will appreciate an extra coat if it is not too tight. Natural materials are best. A male dog's undercarriage must be left free to allow him to go to the toilet!

If your pet has a skin complaint like mange or ringworm, check with your vet that wearing a coat will not aggravate it.

Make sure a coat is washed and treated for fleas regularly. A coat should be taken off as soon as a dog goes indoors, especially if it is wet. Wet pets themselves should be dried off quickly with a towel or hair dryer. Never put a damp coat back on.

Only bathe your dog if it is really filthy, and no more than once a month. Dry it quickly and thoroughly afterwards. Regular brushing a few times a week will get rid of dirt. Use a flea spray once every two weeks.

All pets must have a dry, draught-free place to sleep - preferably raised off the ground. Warm bedding is a must.
