Wheel appeal: The 206cc has the most advanced roof of its kind. Only the Mercedes SLK convertible comes close - but costs twice as much.

The little Peugeot is far more stylish than rivals like the Mazda MX-5 (known to some as the Miata), and of course Mazda drivers have to get their fingers dirty to move the roof. Then there is the two-litre engine, far more powerful than the Mazda's 1.6-litre 108bhp four-cylinder unit.

All in all, Peugeot has gone out not just to corner the market, but in the process has created a totally new one with the biggest slice sure to go to the 206cc.
