A Legco member of the medical functional constituency and president of the Hong Kong Medical Association, Dr Lo Wing-lok is also a keen hiker who has motivated more than 100 members of the medical profession to participate in the Trailwalker event since 1994. He recently joined the event's advisory panel.

Where are you most likely to be at 10am on a Sunday?

If I decide I need some fresh air, I'll wake up at 5am and be on a mountain path at 10am. My favourite hike is Ma On Shan in Sai Kung, and if I'm lucky I can take the trail down to Wong Tai Sin and be in time for lunch with my friends and family. Otherwise, I'll be seeing a patient or reading the newspaper at home.

Where are you most likely to be at 10pm on a Friday?

Playing badminton with old friends at the Craigengower Cricket Club in Causeway Bay. We play every Friday from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. I've missed a few matches due to my Legco commitments, but I still try to meet the players for a drink at about 10pm.

Whom in Hong Kong do you most admire?

My Trailwalker comrades with whom I have shared sweat and tears. I particularly respect Chong Chan-yau, Oxfam Hong Kong's fundraising director, who was born blind. He has amazing strength and courage in the face of difficulty, and never gives up.

Whom do you least admire?

People who cajoled those in authority for favours during the election campaign.

What inspires you?

Youth. When Boris Becker first won Wimbledon 15 years ago, his fight-to-the-death determination was inspiring to watch.

What was your most haunting experience?

Three years ago, on a desolate section of the Lantau Trail with my wife and son, we passed some Vietnamese illegal immigrants. I was worried they would attack my family, but they did us no harm.

When was the last time you were angry?

During the election campaign when several newspapers labelled me the spokesman for well-off doctors in Central. I hated that because I grew up in a housing estate and I know what working-class life is like.

What has been your most unforgettable moment? I became downcast at one point in the campaign, and a group of young doctors took me out to cheer me up. They did a lot subsequently to boost my confidence such as attending every forum I held. I was touched by their support and the sacrifice of their free time.

What has been your biggest achievement?

Having a group of true friends - they are a gift from God. People say you lose touch with your childhood friends as you get older, but I am lucky to have remained in contact with most of mine.

What make you swear? My cabinet's brainstorming session. Everyone attacks everyone else's ideas in an attempt to get the best solution for the agenda.

What has been your biggest mistake?

I failed to fulfil a promise I made to a friend during the election. I am still upset about this because it was very important to him. We are friends again, but I will always wish I had done better.

Is there something you are never without?

A Rolex watch my mum gave me 20 years ago when I enrolled into Hong Kong University. Unfortunately, I can't say my wedding ring, which is misshapen because it's made of soft gold. I still have it though.
