International Day for Disabled Persons, last Sunday, was designed to highlight the need for all of us to show more care for disabled people throughout the world.

I am sure some special functions were held in Hong Kong by voluntary organisations to recognise that day.

However, it is also important to look at the bigger picture and recognise the great contribution disabled people make to our society. Take for example Chong Chan-yau, who has overcome the obstacles of his blindness and excelled in life. He is now Oxfam's fund-raising director. His determination and hard work should prove to the community that disabled people can do just as well as able-bodied people. Then there is the sprinter So Wa-wai who won three gold medals and broke three world records at the Paralympics in Sydney in October.

Hong Kong people can be proud of these two individuals and they illustrate that we should never look down on the disabled.
