It might be more appropriate to call Kelly Chen's new release a reflection of Mark Lui's music exploration. Lui has been producing music for Chen since her first album and his interests have recently moved from Oasis-style Britpop to electronic dance tunes.
On the 10-track Big Day, three tunes are written and arranged by Lui and follow his interest in rave music. Unfortunately, they are not in the mould of either Paul Van Dyke or Ken Ishii and fail to impress.
However, Chen's other collaborator, Ronald Ng, produces two songs - and they are both impressive. The J-pop style Friday File deserves to be the first single. Lavender, the theme song from the soon-to-be-released movie in which Chen also stars, is the best tune of them all and allows Chen to shine.
