I could not agree more with the sentiments expressed by Christine Loh in the article headlined, 'Authorities blind to the problem of racial discrimination' (South China Morning Post, December 4). Besides legislation, we need anti-discrimination education in order to root out discrimination and get rid of it in Hong Kong. During the course of a dinner in a Chinese restaurant on the Gold Coast in Australia, some family friends from Hong Kong made some interesting remarks. There were the ubiquitous comments about the poor service provided by non-Chinese maids in Hong Kong. Later, the issue of racism in Australia was also raised and views were expressed which are widespread in the SAR. Hong Kong people consider racism as something inflicted upon Chinese people by whites. How can the SAR Government expect Hong Kong to be taken seriously as an international city if such ignorance is not dealt with? ANTHONY LEE Corinda, Queensland, Australia
