Updated at 2.12pm, Thursday: Chinaren.com, lost the personal homepages of its 300,000 users due to technical problems last month, Wuhan-based Changjiang Daily reported on Thursday.
Chinaren.com, under the popular Chinese Internet portal sohu.com, is among the top 10 most popular Chinese Internet portals in China.
In an Internet message, Chinaren.com said its Homepage Express program crashed on November 28 because of a ''rare'' hardware error. The ICP had tried to retrieve the lost pages for 10 days, then gave up.
Chinaren.com blamed the sudden power blackout at its headquarters in Beijing for the breakdown. The technicians were doing regular maintenance work on their servers during that time, source with Chinaren told the newspaper.
But Chinaren.com did not rule out the possibility of hacker attack, according to Changjiang Daily.
Many Homepage Express users were upset. One complained to the paper that he spent nearly a month to set up his own homepage, he lost his creation as well as a contact list and saved messages from cyber friends.
