A unionist legislator will try to revive public debate on setting a minimum wage by organising talks next month.
Lee Cheuk-yan, general secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions, said he would invite lawmakers from across the political spectrum and academics to air their views on the issue.
Those being invited will include members of the Democratic Party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Progressive Alliance.
Mr Lee said setting a minimum wage would encourage more people to work and help alleviate poverty.
The move came after Secretary for Education and Manpower Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun appeared to soften her stance on setting up a minimum wage in some trades, including the pig and chicken-rearing industries and workers developing private homes for the elderly.
