I refer to the letter from Sharon Tang headlined, 'Take the initiative' (South China Morning Post, December 20).
Ms Tang expressed concern about the declining standard of English in Hong Kong's schools and urged students to use their initiative to improve their language skills.
On August 26 in my letter to these columns headlined, 'Cartoon lessons', I suggested that TVB and ATV could have English subtitles for its cartoons.
I got no response. Perhaps there are technical obstacles, or it would be too expensive to implement such a policy.
I have another idea. Would it be possible to have English subtitles on the evening news on both channels at 7.30?
I think the presenters on both channels are terrific. They speak standard English with impeccable accents.
