1961: More than 200 people were left homeless when fire destroyed 13 wooden huts on Hing Wah Street.

1967: Nearly 500,000 people visited the colony in 1966 and spent $730 million, according to figures released by the Hong Kong Tourist Association.

1970: More than 1,000 young men and women in Hong Kong had found dating partners through a computer matching service during the past six months. However, so far none of the couples had married, reported the ComputaDate company.

1980: The Government announced the Ap Lei Chau Bridge, linking the island to Aberdeen, would open in March. The $32 million, 230-metre span would provide better convenience for the 20,000 residents moving into the new Ap Lei Chau public housing estate, more than tripling the population of the once sparsely populated island.
