The twelve workers, who worked for the hotel on a casual basis for as long as four years, accused the Mandarin's management of not informing them of their legal rights.

''We didn't know that we were all entitled to pay leave until one of our sacked colleagues successful claimed nearly $30,000 after complaining to the Labour Department,'' the 38-year-old now-unemployed Cheung Tze-wai said.

He claimed that the hotel owes them more than $1 million.

The workers also said that the hotel exploited loopholes in labour law.

''After finding out that we were entitled to holiday pay for working 18 hours per week for one month, they made us work three consecutive weeks and take the following week off,'' Mr Cheung said.
