IN a tribute to ''filial piety'', the Students' Union of Aberdeen Technical School held a Parents Day Variety Show at the theatre of Sheung Wan Cultural and Recreational Centre recently.

  The organisers hoped the occasion would foster a closer understanding between parents and students. Each mother was presented with a carnation as a sign of respect by members of the Students' Union.

  The audience of over 500 included guests, parents, Salesian Fathers and Brothers, teachers, as well as past and present students of the school.

    Before the show began, the principal, Brother John Wu, gave an address, and he was followed by the students' union president Wilky Chung Wai-kiu.

    Father Joseph Lau, the school supervisor was called upon to present the souvenirs.

  The programme truly lived up to its promise of ''variety''.

     There were song, instrumental and dance items as well as a drama and a magic show.

   The drama, a hilarious farce, was performed by students and friends from volunteer groups.

  The audience thoroughly enjoyed the play, which saw one of the schoolboys dressed up as a maid. The entertainment carried the lesson that ''your image is not built upon by what you wear, but on what you are''.

  The recently set up Parents' Committee also had an offering for the show, an excerpt from the well-known Chinese opera Daughter of an Emperor, performed by two mothers.

  The item that excited the most interest was the Game, played on stage by four pairs of students and their mothers.

   The purpose of the game was to demonstrate levels of understanding between teenagers and their mothers. Participants were asked questions like ''How old was your mother when you were born?'' and ''What was the most recent present your son gave you?''    The conclusion reached at the end of the game was that most mothers understood their sons thoroughly but not vice versa. Hosts of the show pointed out that young people should show more concern for their parents.

  It was an evening roundly enjoyed by all concerned. In an atmosphere fragrant with the scent of carnations, everyone felt the goal of bringing parents and children closer together had been admirably achieved.
