Looking for a partner with the best credentials

Sherry Lee

Kelly Chan is 31 and a typical Fortunate Marriage Service client. Every time she sees young women lovingly holding hands with their sweethearts in the street, her heart sinks.

'When I was younger I had a lot of admirers,' she says. But the supply dwindled to none at all. 'I started to feel scared that I would never find a husband,' she says.

A university graduate, Chan is a marketing manager of a trading company and earns more than $30,000 per month. Modern and independent on the surface, she's an old-fashioned woman at heart and would prefer a partner she could look up to. In this she thinks she's no different from most other women. Chan is quite specific about potential partners. At a height of 1.60 metres, she wants a man who stands from 1.63 metres to 1.77 metres, has a university degree and earns $30,000 to $50,000 a month. And no sugar daddies; he must be the same age as her.

From a pool of pictures from Siu, Chan picked out a few good-looking men, but they didn't want to meet her. 'The men said they wanted younger woman, I felt upset,' she says. Finally Siu found her eventual husband, a civil engineer. 'Frankly I had no feeling of love at first sight,' she says. Six months later, however, Chan started to love him. 'He is honest and gentle, and he cares for me so much, he always remembers my birthday, buys me gifts, and telephones me,' she says.

Peter Lee, 30, is a young man with unrealistic aspirations, Siu says. His Ms Right must be under 25, and have long hair, be tall, slender, beautiful, have big eyes and good education.

Last February, the businessman signed up with Fortunate Marriage Service, looking for his ideal woman. Seven months later and he's still looking.

'I am very picky,' he admits. 'I have good qualifications, so I need quality women.'
