Updated at 5.57pm, Saturday: Most employees expect to receive a five per-cent pay rise in the new year to cover the contribution to the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) Scheme, a survey by the Hong Kong Catholic Commission for Labour Affairs shows.
A four-day-survey of 477 employees was carried out last month. The findings, released on Saturday, showed 73 per cent believed a five per cent or more pay rise would be reasonable.
A spokesman for the commission said people expected the amount to cover their five per cent contribution to the MPF Scheme, which was launched on December 1. Less than one per cent worried there would be salary cut and 14 per cent expected to have their pay frozen.
The commission called on employers for pay rises to alleviate the financial hardship of workers.
