THREE-ON-THREE basketball is ready to sweep the territory and the Asia-Pacific region as Reebok prepare to launch a series of junior tournaments next month.

  The series will continue until November in seven countries - Hongkong, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Australia.

  Hongkong will host the first games on July 17 and 18 at Victoria Park, when 96 teams are expected to take part.

  The competition will be open to boys in two age groups - under 16 and under 19 - and will run as a series of round-robin or knockout competitions over one to two days to determine the winning team.

  The Hongkong winners will receive an additional bonus after the finals when they will be invited to play a friendly challenge against MTV presenters Danny McGill and David Wu and STAR TV's Tripp Dixon.

  The regional tournaments will culminate in an Asia-Pacific Challenge to be held in Sydney, Australia from November 20-21.

  Winning teams in both age groups from each country will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the event where they will join other finalists in a regional showdown.

  Three-on-three basketball, which was born in the streets and playgrounds of the United States, has already caught on in Europe with a series of national competitions.

  ''It is a fast-paced, tactical sport which is not only thrilling to play but also exhilarating to watch,'' said Peter Birch, vice president of Reebok International Asia-Pacific.

  Two years ago Reebok tournaments were launched in Australia where the format was adapted from the States to include music while the games were in play.

  The results were overwhelming - in a series of six events more than 2,000 schoolchildren playing in over 500 teams took part.

  The three-a-side game is played on a half court with each team being allowed one substitute. A game consists of two seven-minute halves with a change of possession after each basket is scored.
