Superstar Chow Yun-fat has been appointed the first philatelic ambassador of the Hong Kong Post Office.

He recently displayed the personalised stamps he received from Postmaster-General Luk Ping-chuen, which will be on sale from February 1.

Chow encouraged young people to write letters and send cards despite the growing popularity of e-mail and e-cards. He said letters and cards had a personal touch which could never be replaced.

Japanese idol Takashi Sorimachi was in town last week to promote his upcoming movie with Andy Lau Tak-wah and his March concert.

Sorimachi and Lau exchanged souvenirs at a press conference. He also met his fans in Tsim Sha Tsui and signed autographs for them.

This was his third visit to Hong Kong.

Retired Taiwanese actress Brigitte Lin, wife of Esprit owner Michael Ying, confirmed the rumour that she had been pregnant for four months. Ying's ex- wife, Flora Cheong-Leen, congratulated them, adding that the biggest blessing for a woman was to have a loving husband and a happy family.
