Two important landmarks in Hong Kong's cultural and leisure services - the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Island East Sports Centre - have been officially opened.

The film archive is the single most important storehouse of Hong Kong films and film-related materials.

The sports centre is the first clubhouse-type indoor sports complex to  be built in the eastern part of Hong Kong Island.

At the opening ceremony,  Financial Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen  said  the commissioning of the film archive facilitated the systematic preservation and collection of film treasures. Since its establishment, the film archive had built up an impressive collection, including some classic film prints that were long believed lost.

'We owe much to generous support from both local and overseas private donors, various film organisations and the film sector.'

He said the Island East Sports Centre was 'a big boost for recreational and sporting facilities in the territory'.

Situated at 50 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, the $185 million Hong Kong Film Archive is home to  several studios, an exhibition hall, film and information archives and other facilities.

To ensure the optimum preservation of its precious film collection, the four-storey archive is equipped with state-of-the-art temperature and humidity control systems. Access to all information and materials is gained through a sophisticated, computerised multimedia system.

In addition, independent viewing rooms allow researchers to  see more than 3,800 Hong Kong films in the archive's possession.

Apart from films, the archive also has a vast collection of materials such as publicity posters, film photos, scripts and reviews.

The $300 million Island East Sports Centre, spanning 12,000 square metres, is an ultra-modern complex with such indoor facilities as a main arena, a bowling lawn, gymnasiums, dance rooms,  table tennis rooms, a driving range,  indoor climbing wall  and a swimming pool with a tropical rain forest theme.
