OVER the past few years, the most common causes of accidents have fallen into four main categories. These have now become the focus of the police in their ongoing job to reduce traffic accidents.
The causes have been identified as driving too fast; following too close to the vehicle in front; improper or illegal turns; and careless lane changing.
These actions are the cause of 30 per cent of all accidents that result in injuries.
Driving too fast and following too close to the vehicle in front have, historically, accounted for one fifth of all accidents.
It must be borne in mind that there is a difference between ''driving too fast'' and ''exceeding the speed limit''.
There are many occasions when the posted speed limit can be unsafe if there is heavy pedestrian traffic, poor weather and bad light.
