Wrongly jailed teenager Lin Qiaoying yesterday blamed a break-in at her family's US home when asked why duplicate identification documents bearing her name had surfaced several times.

Defence counsel Neville Sarony, SC, had accused Ms Lin, 18, of being involved in forgery.

Mr Sarony is representing part-time court interpreter Wong Kin-ang, 45, who, along with immigration assistant Wong Chui-kam, 28, is accused of perverting the course of justice. Both men deny the charge.

District Court Judge Barnabas Fung Wah ruled on Tuesday that the third accused, chief immigration assistant Lung Kin-sang, 37, had no case to answer.

Ms Lin said she had been threatened by the officer and interpreter into admitting she was another girl - Chan Lai-na - and was travelling on a forged mainland passport.

Submitting several documents seized from a girl called Lam Man-fong on May 8, 1999, Mr Sarony told the court the US green card, re-entry permit, student card and Hong Kong immigration arrival card were all in Ms Lin's name and had her US address attached. Ms Lam was detained while in transit from Fuzhou to the US.
