Terence Howard can trace his love of wine back to 1980, with a bottle of Chateau Lafite 1971.
To one who had until then tasted only inexpensive wines like Mateus Rose or Mouton-Cadet, the Lafite was a revelation.
Now the managing director of Shenyin Wanguo Securities (HK) Ltd, he has about 1,800 bottles at his home on MacDonnell Road, Mid-Levels.
His refrigerated cabinets are packed so tightly it's difficult to see what's in there, but a quick rummage reveals rare wines such as half a dozen vintages of Montrachet DRC, 1985 Echezeaux, 1971 Penfolds Grange Hermitage, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques, and bottles of the 1976 Krug Collection, each of which is numbered (Howard bought auspicious numbers).
He has another 2,500 bottles stored with Hong Kong wine merchants, about 3,000 in London, as well as bottles in Paris and Singapore.
