GENETIC tests have provided further proof that the infant found abandoned in Yau Ma Tei three weeks ago is the newborn child abducted from a maternity ward a few days earlier.

Senior Government Chemist Tsui Pui said two recently completed tests found the genetic profile of the infant to resemble those of Leung Yuen-shan, who was abducted from Caritas Medical Centre in Cheung Sha Wan on May 28.

Mr Tsui said two more tests were being conducted. He estimated that, if the results were positive, the chance of the baby not being Yuen-shan - the newborn child of Leung Wing-tat, 34, and Wong Yuk-ying, 32 - would be one in 20,000.

He said laboratory officials would today pass the results of the first two tests to Social Welfare Department officials in the hope that ''an early parenthood confirmation'' could be arranged.

Although the baby is living with the Leungs, she remains a ward of the Director of Social Welfare until the parents assume permanent guardianship at a Juvenile Court.

The infant's abduction has prompted the Hospital Authority and police to set up a working group to improve security in maternity wards.
