A gang of violent criminals is terrorising and stealing from tourists and attacking shops in Chungking Mansions.
The group - believed to be Pakistani nationals resident in Hong Kong - has stepped up its activities in recent weeks, and shop owners believe the gang is becomingly increasingly brazen after a series of attacks over the Lunar New Year period.
Recent assaults have targeted women. The Sunday Morning Post spoke to several Indian women, some of whom said they were too frightened to complain to the police after their ordeals. Four of them, who said they were attacked last week, showed clear signs of having been assaulted. Only one woman had notified police.
Rachhpal Kaur, 49, covered in bruises on the left side of her face and with a fresh cut above her left eye, said she was attacked in her room on the sixth floor.
'These six people burst in and beat me with a belt,' she said. 'They took my watch and my goods. They said they would kill me. Before they came into the flat they cut the telephone line so no one could call for help.'
Police have confirmed they are aware ethnic gangs are targeting the maze-like mansions and have promised to step up patrols.
