A Hong Kong dentist and a man claiming to be a former police officer in the territory have been arrested in Macau on suspicion of drug trafficking.
They were arrested on Wednesday night with the dentist's 17-year-old girlfriend after Macau police received a tip-off. Officers say they the pair are suspected of having run a drug-trafficking operation targeting teenagers at nightspots.
Investigators said Ecstasy pills, marijuana and other drugs were allegedly bought in the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone. The drugs were smuggled into Macau and sold to teenagers in karaoke bars, pubs and at rave parties. Drugs with a street value of $110,000 were seized at three addresses.
They said the operation was headed by the 47-year-old man who claimed to be a retired Hong Kong policeman. Surnamed Lai, he was said to be a Hong Kong resident.
A source said the dentist was a 37-year-old local resident holding Hong Kong identification documents and was married with a young daughter. He runs a well-established dental clinic in Macau. The three will appear before public prosecutors for further investigation.
