'Wake up Vivienne. It is still 3.30pm. You have not even taken the the first step yet,' I remind myself, trying to return from my fantasy.

I'm on the ferry from Cheung Chau, on my way to the boutique Ad:hoc in Causeway Bay, where a walk-in casting could change my life. The hip fashion store is looking for new faces to promote its spring and summer range.

The winner of this walk-in casting session wins an Ad:hoc $5,000 shopping coupon. But that's not the reason why most hopefuls will attend. The most important thing is that the winner will become a model, then a star.

On the bus ride to the venue, I try to focus on my potential. 'Vivienne, you are tall. You have nice hair. You have style . . .'

Soon I am standing outside the Times Square store and it is packed. A huge crowd is gathered outside the shop gazing at the would-be models being photographed and filmed. I decide to join them and take stock of the situation from afar for a while.
