The dust has not settled on the elite school debate since Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun made the issue a hot topic last week.

The Secretary for Education and Manpower sent a letter to the SAR's 22 Grant Schools Council schools expressing her dissatisfaction with them.

In her letter, the education chief said she had talked to friends about the education system over the Lunar New Year holiday and had found there was 'a strong sense of dissatisfaction with the traditional elite schools'. She also urged them to review their existing practices critically and not to 'rest on past laurels'.

Last month Mrs Law accused the elite schools of conservative and uninspired teaching and complained that too much attention was paid to rote learning.

On Monday the Grant Schools Council met Ms Law to discuss her comments. She said she regretted the wording of the letter, but not its substance.

Chairman of the council, Rosalind Chan Lo-sai, labelled Ms Law's comments and accusations as unacceptable. 'It's such a ridiculous statement. The problems she mentioned are the problems of the education system, not our schools. Besides, she supported her views with just one or two cases, and we are not even allowed to investigate their legitimacy,' she said.

'We don't want apologies and regrets. We want her to withdraw her comments.'
