A $2.6 billion MTR link, due to open in 2005, will whisk visitors to the new Disney theme park in just over 20 minutes from Central. Construction of the link from Yam O on the Tung Chung line to the Penny's Bay site is set to begin next year, MTR Corporation project director Russell Black said yesterday. 'We have almost completed our preliminary design and intend moving to detailed design mid-year,' he said. 'We anticipate starting construction in 2002 to open for service a little before the Disney opening in 2005.' Mr Black estimated that journey times would be about 31 minutes from Tsim Sha Tsui and 24 minutes from Hong Kong Station at Central. New Territories and cross-border visitors would take 29 minutes on the MTR network from the East Rail interchange at Kowloon Tong, or 15 minutes from West Rail interchange at Nam Cheong station, he said. The 3.2km rail link will provide services at four- to 10-minute intervals from Yam O between 6am and 1am. The journey will take about four minutes. Mr Black said it was too early to estimate fares, but later indicated they might be similar to those of MTR journeys to Tung Chung. He also said efforts were being made to persuade Disney chiefs to allow Octopus cards to be used for entry into the theme park and for purchases. The Airport Authority said it was planning a ferry terminal at Disney with direct links to cities and airports in the Pearl River Delta.
