Hong Kong's favourite athletes received due recognition at the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2000 Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The annual Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, organised this year by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, were divided into three categories: the Hong Kong Senior Sports Stars (six winners), the Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars (six winners) and the Hong Kong Sports Team of the Year.
Contestants were nominated by sports associations. During the public voting period from January 22 to 31, 2001, about 6,900 people cast their votes. The final selection of winners was made by a panel of judges comprising representatives from the sports, recreation, education and youth affairs sectors.
The results were as follows:
Hong Kong Senior Sports Stars: Rebecca Chiu (squash), Marco Fu (billiards), Fung Ying- ki (disabled fencing), Lee Lai- shan (windsurfing), So Wa-wai (disabled track-and-field), Wong Kam-po (cycling).
Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars: Christine Bailey (triathlon), Lai Wai-ling (disabled table-tennis), Lau King- nin (cycling), Tam Wai-yeung (basketball), Tsai Hiu-wai (amateur swimming), Yu Sum-yee (cycling).
