Five students from the City University took 16 students and two teachers from Chuen Yuen College on a visit to the mainland. During the Experiential Learning Tour, the group visited two primary schools set up by Nurturing The Young Association. The trip aimed to show care and concern for our less fortunate mainland counterparts. After six hours' travel, we arrived in Lianzhou, a remote city in Guangdong. We started our visit the next day. We drove to the village where the school was located. When we got out of the car, there were many young smiling small faces. We taught the children to make small handicrafts and we danced and sang folk songs with them. During lunch hours, we visited some of their homes. The villagers were warm and sincere. We were happy and we realised that happiness would double if it is shared with others. To the mainland children, education is a luxury. School fees constitute more than one-fourth of their family's annual income. Nevertheless, they treasure every opportunity, live a simple life and study hard. The tour was part of Caring for Our Mainland 2001, organised by a group of BA (Hon) English for Professional Communication final year students.
