A man responsible for feeding animals at a wildlife park in Jinan, Shandong province, was killed by tigers as he went to the toilet against a wall.
The Shandong native was killed on Sunday at Jinan Safari World, Shanghai's Wenhui Daily reported yesterday.
He told a co-worker he needed to go to the bathroom but when he failed to return, police were called. They found his body lying on the ground surrounded by tigers. The newspaper said the 19-year-old had been bitten in the neck and was covered in blood.
Police believe Xu climbed the wall of a partially constructed building used to raise the tigers to relieve himself. They said the smell probably caused the tigers to pounce.
In 1999, a bus driver was torn to shreds by three Siberian tigers at Shanghai Safari Park as junior high school students watched.
The driver, Xu Weiming, was trying to fix the bus, which broke down while transporting the students through the park. The case went to court and the park agreed to pay his family 300,000 yuan (HK$282,000) in compensation.
