Task-force plea

May I suggest that the Government consider wiping out the curse of graffiti that appears to have been spreading across Hong Kong in recent months?

This would improve the environment, boost tourism and give the impression of a safer Hong Kong. As a native of England and frequent traveller to Europe, I am used to seeing once-beautiful cities defaced by depressing or offensive graffiti. When I came to Hong Kong a year ago, it was a welcome relief that there appeared to be little graffiti. This used to be one of the reasons I liked Hong Kong so much. Not so now. I name the Airport Express and Peak Tram journeys, parks in Tsim Sha Tsui, walkways in Kowloon Tong and parts of Whampoa, including the seafront, as examples of graffiti areas.

The young of Hong Kong should feel proud of who they are. My overall impression is that they are better behaved and have better values than their Western counterparts.

Sadly, the graffiti in my children's play area started in chalk and is now in more-permanent materials.

Although I am sure plenty of graffiti is not of local Hong Kong origin, there is no need for Hong Kong to incorporate dubious Western 'values', such as vandalism, into its culture.

An anti-graffiti taskforce and hotline would pay for itself.
