Green Island study looks at recycling waste in production
Green Island Cement, stepping up its efforts to recycle waste, aims to reduce production costs and provide better environmental protection.
It has teamed up with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to study an innovative system which would recycle SAR household waste into raw materials used in the cement manufacturing process.
Green Island International managing director Gary Yu said the new system was expected to handle about 50 per cent or 4,800 tonnes of waste production from households in Hong Kong.
The system would provide the company, a subsidiary of Cheung Kong Infrastructure (Holdings), with an efficient waste-management programme.
Mr Yu said the recycling system would prevent the production of dioxin, a chemical dangerous to public health.
It would also create energy that would help save electricity in the manufacture of cement products.
Generally speaking, the process would save US$2 per tonne in power expenses.
