Shipping families pay respects to magnate

Dignitaries packed St Joseph's Church yesterday to pay their last respects to shipping tycoon Frank Chao Sze-bang, who died of a heart attack on February 17.

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, his wife, Betty Tung Chiu Hung-ping, and Executive Councillor Yang Ti-liang were among those who attended the requiem Mass in Garden Road.

Mr Yang, delivering the eulogy, praised Frank Chao for his contribution to the shipping industry and the community. Among the pallbearers were Hong Kong Shipowners Association chairman Andrew Chen and shipping magnate Anthony Hardy.

Frank Chao, who was 67, is survived by his widow, Betty, son Joachim and daughter Anastasia.

Director of Home Affairs Shelley Lee Lai-kuen, Trade Development Council chairman Peter Woo Kwong-ching and wife Bessie Pao, daughter of late shipping tycoon Sir Y. K. Pao, also presented wreaths.

Younger brother Cecil Chao Sze-tsung, 64, said after the Mass: 'What I miss most are the days when we came to Hong Kong from Shanghai and then travelled to the United Kingdom.
