Waiter gets 22 years for 'ice' haul

A waiter caught smuggling more than 4kg of the drug 'ice' into the SAR by stuffing it inside chocolates and cakes was sentenced to 22 years' jail yesterday.

Deputy Judge Bernard Whaley said drugs such as ice had a more detrimental impact on society than heroin.

Ou Yang Min-chyuan, 35, of Taiwan, was found guilty by the Court of First Instance of trying to smuggle ice valued at $1.5 million through the Lowu checkpoint on August 1 last year.

Deputy Judge Whaley described the operation in which Ou Yang was the courier as well organised. He said portions of ice were compacted into balls, wrapped in plastic and covered in chocolate. They were then wrapped in the original foil, placed in boxes and carried in a plastic bag.

A quantity of ice was also found in several green-tea cakes.

Deputy Judge Whaley sentenced Ou Yang, who denied one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug, to 23 years' jail but reduced the term to 22 years because of his clean record.
