The Joint Schools Mural Exchange Exhibition  has  brought out students' latent artistic talents.

The show displayed murals from 12 schools, produced  as part of the Muralists in Schools project.

The project was conducted at the 12 selected secondary schools, with the aim of boosting appreciation of the arts through the painting of murals.

The project, organised by the Hong Kong Mural Society, with a grant of about $400,000 from the Quality Education Fund,  is in its second year.

Under the programme,  students planned and painted the murals, with the guidance of experienced muralists.

Amateur muralist Irene Leung Man-wing has  enjoyed helping the students with their work.

'Sometimes principals and teachers tell students what to draw.  But we try to avoid that  and encourage them to paint what they want,' said Ms Leung.

She said it took nearly a month to make the walls suitable for painting murals.

Third former Yip Wong- keung, 17, a participant from Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School, said more than 20 schoolmates worked several months on their mural Flying High With Flapping Wings  with the help of two muralists.

'Painting murals is completely different from drawing on paper.

'The wall is wide and tall, and  we had to clean it up before we could put colours on it,' said Wong-keung.

Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School's mural, Love The Nature,  conveyed the mes sage of protecting the environment.

Chairman of the school's arts society Jeffen Chan Kei-kin, 18, said they chose the theme because they wanted to focus on  environment protection in this era when everyone is rushing to embrace high technology.

'Painting murals takes a lot of effort and patience. Now that it is complete, we get excited each time we pass the mural,' Kei-kin said.

Shun Lee Catholic Secondary School's mural covered a wall beside a flight of stairs.

It  featured fishes, marine creatures, amusement park rides under the sea and an abundance of sea objects.

The other schools that participated in the programme included: Holy Trinity College, John F Kennedy Centre, Ju Ching Chu Secondary School, Lok Sin tong Young Ko Hsiao Secondary School, TMCC Holm Glad College, Sheng Kung Hui Bishop Baker Secondary School, Shatin Methodist College, and TWGHs Lee Ching Dea Memorial College.
