A Buddhist cleansing ceremony is to be held at the South China Morning Post's new offices on Tuesday to calm staff fears amid rumours that the building may be haunted.

Grisly stories about the 16th-floor offices of Somerset House in Quarry Bay have been circulating since the Post moved from neighbouring Dorset House a fortnight ago.

Some members of staff have even asked to be excused from late shifts because of rumours that a ghost has been seen in the female toilets.

A female editorial employee claimed she heard her name being called out while she was alone in the toilet.

'I heard someone calling my name on my left while I was washing my hands. But there was nobody there when I turned to the left. I was not scared and I simply walked out of the toilet,' the features reporter said.

Inquiries by the Post's news team have, however, failed to substantiate any of the increasingly wild stories circulating about the building's past.
