More than $20 million will be spent over the next two years to help bring cleaner air to commuters waiting for buses and taxis at six indoor public transport terminals.
The Transport Department plans to use the cash to upgrade the ventilation systems of the terminals in Kwai Hing, Tsim Sha Tsui, the Peak, Shamshuipo, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun.
It said after a review of progress undertaken recently that the improvements could be finished by next year.
Department senior transport engineer Lee Wing-wa denied that incorrect forecasts on the use of terminals by vehicles and commuters was the cause of the problem.
'Clearly, with changes to the environment, such as a quickening in population growth, we need to make some improvement along the way. I think everyone can understand that,' he suggested.
The terminals are mainly located in highly populated areas and serve as interchanges for buses, minibuses and taxis.
