Raft sets sail from island

EXPLORER Tim Severin and his six crew left the Japanese island of Miyako yesterday, on the second leg of his voyage across the Pacific, using telephone poles to replace the broken masts of his bamboo raft.

Severin, seeking to emulate Chinese explorers he believes crossed the Pacific to America 3,000 years ago, had his fore and mainmasts damaged off Taiwan.
