Former legislator Christine Loh Kung-wai has ruled out standing in the next chief executive selection.
Her decision is a setback for the pro-democracy camp, which had hoped to come up with a heavyweight to challenge Tung Chee-hwa next year.
'Many people have suggested that to me, but I have never considered running,' Ms Loh said yesterday.
Ms Loh became a lawmaker in 1992 but left the legislature last summer and now heads the non-profit-making think-tank Civic Exchange.
'I don't think it's very meaningful to take part in the election as it is a small-circle election,' she said.
But she said it would be good for the development of democracy in the SAR if someone from the pro-democracy camp competed against Mr Tung, who is expected to run for a second five-year term.
