A game which allows people to vent their hatred towards corrupt officials by killing them online has dramatically increased hits on a mainland Web site.

To promote a series of anti-corruption news reports during the National People's Congress two weeks ago, the Web site FM365.com launched an online game which lets users shoot dead four corrupt officials. FM365.com is a portal founded by mainland computer giant Legend Group.

The four officials are Wang Baosen, former vice-mayor of Beijing, Cheng Kejie, former NPC vice-chairman, Hu Changqing, former governor of Jiangxi province, and Yang Qianxian, former chief of Xiamen customs.

Wang committed suicide and the others were executed for embezzlement.

Entering the portal's newsroom, users can click and shoot effigies of the four officials, who fly into the computer screens from all angles with suitcases, wads of dollars, or a blonde mistress.

The officials spray blood and fall with a blood-curdling scream each time they are shot.

The four were chosen because they took part in some of the most sensational corruption cases, said Li Keyong, a FM365.com news editor.

Mr Li said his team chose the three who were executed because they were the most senior officials to die because of corruption. Yang, the Xiamen customs chief, though a relatively small potato, played a key role in the notorious Yuan Hua smuggling scandal in Fujian province last year.

Mr Li said hits on the page had shot since the game started and it had proven so popular the server had gone down several times. He said he believed people were attracted by the game's interactive feature.'

He said his team would develop more news-related games in the future.

'This is not the site's first game. One that let people beat up Falun Gong leader Li Hongzhi generated more than two million hits in one week.

'We had to stop that one for some reasons,' Mr Li said. 'The anti-corruption game is surely more in line with Communist Party policy.'
