The judge presiding over the case of two lawyers accused of plotting to blackmail tycoon Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum postponed his verdict yesterday after he was told the day he had in mind would be inauspicious.
Barrister Graham Harris, defending solicitor Ailey Yeung Chin-tat in the case, asked District Court judge John Saunders not to deliver a verdict on Friday after he finished his final submissions yesterday.
'I have specific instructions to ask Your Honour not to deliver your verdict this Friday because it would be an inauspicious day,' he said, without elaborating.
Judge Saunders said he had intended to give the verdict on that day but agreed to postpone it to next Wednesday.
Earlier in his submission, Mr Harris told the court not to forget the subordinate role of his client in the relationship with co-accused Thomson Mo Sze-lung.
He also stressed the whole scheme was not intended to be serious.
