Democratic Party lawmaker Sin Chung-kai, who represents the IT sector, said of 280 people who had responded to his inquiries on the issue, more than 80 per cent suggested training local professionals should be the long-term target to ease staff shortages.

Although half of respondents agreed the Admission of Mainland Professionals scheme outlined in the Budget could ease the problem, they considered it a short-term solution.

More than half said a ceiling should be set and urged the Government to make a detailed evaluation of the actual demand.

Nearly 60 per cent admitted their companies had encountered a shortage of IT professionals, which was particularly serious in the areas of software development and support, technical support and system analysis.
