It is disappointing to note that HSBC is planning a substantial cutback in its workforce and a radical streamlining of back-office operations in Hong Kong in favour of a 'cost-effective' relocation in Guangzhou. I take it that only bottom-line considerations are being taken into account by management to ensure that the bank remains viable amid the increasingly competitive global financial-services market. If so, I believe it is only logical that HSBC should change its name from Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation to the more appropriate Guangzhou and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Any entity that carries the Hong Kong name but intends to subjugate the job security and welfare of its local staff in order to achieve the practical bottom line should obviously not be allowed to make representations of the SAR in any manner.
