I refer to Kevin Kwong's feature headlined 'Turned off by television' (South China Morning Post, March 19), which was critical of the prime-time offerings on the English-language channels of TVB and ATV. Although your TV critic provided a detailed analysis of programming preferences, there is one element of the equation which was not mentioned in the article, one which I hope can be seen as a positive factor - that is, Radio Television Hong Kong's (RTHK) contribution. The English-language unit of our Public and Current Affairs Section normally produces two weekly programmes - Media Watch and The Week in Politics - which are broadcast on Pearl and World. In addition, such well-regarded shows as Hong Kong Connection are translated from Cantonese and are also shown on the commercial channels' English services. Although admittedly our efforts do not appear during the 'golden hours' of 8pm-11.30pm, we like to think they are appreciated by those viewers who are able to see them and that the standards we strive to maintain can have a beneficial influence in the debate on programme quality. Viewers may be interested to know that our English television productions will also be available via the Internet from tomorrow ( www.rthk.org.hk ).
