Students display creativity, impressive multimedia skills
A keen interest in animation and computerised editing has won a Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) student the championship in a competition.
Students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions took part in the Occupational Safety and Health Computer Creative Media Design Competition, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of occupational safety and health.
According to Dr Lo Wai-kwok, chairman of the Electronics and Communication Industry Safety and Health Committee, the format of this year's competition was different.
'In the past, we set designat ed areas for contestants to do their designs in, such as animation, homepage and electronic games. But as students are excelling in computing, we decided to broaden the competition so they can develop their abilities to the fullest,' Dr Lo said.
Students joined the competition in teams with not more than five members.
Chow Wing-ming, 24, a higher diploma student at PolyU, beat 12 other finalists to win the championship.
Mr Chow's entry was a short film he made using software including 3D Studio Max and Poser. The one-minute film portrays an alien attacked by others and forced to land on Earth. It discovers that humans are not aware of the importance of occupational safety and decides to promote the concept.
