When I first migrated to Australia, I was constantly being told how Hong Kong was consistently ahead of Australia. Unfortunately, this does not seem to apply to the banking sector. Right now in Australia, our banks are starting to realise they are not merely profit-making entities. Australian banks are starting to realise they are part of the communities in which they are located. On that note, one must question whether HSBC should be renamed HSBCR - Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for the Rich. After years of customer loyalty from the people of Hong Kong, is it too much to ask for HSBC to give a little back to the community by helping out its poorer customers? Perhaps it is time for the people of Hong Kong to create their own community bank. ANTHONY LEE Corinda, Queensland, Australia
