Singer Nickie Fok Wing-yan, of university band Cyan the 8th, captured the spotlight more than once at the 6th U Sound Festival at the Ko Shan Theatre on Wednesday night.

The group, which includes members from City University and the University of Hong Kong, was among six bands performing before a capacity crowd at the concert. The annual event is organised by students to promote band music. This year's performers were selected from among 13 entries. Support for band music has been growing in general but interest among those at university still needs to increase, said U Sound Association chairman Calvin Li Yung, a Lingnan student. He attributed this to commercial pop culture and an obsession with celebrities.

'It's difficult to promote activities that are not part of mainstream culture,' said Mr Li, who cited local band Beyond among his own musical influences.
